Destin History Bounties

Arrr, lend ole Captain Bernie B yer ears — the Creek and Choctaw fished these shores as far back as the 7th century. Their canoes carved the bayous long before any Spanish sail blew through!

Spaniards charted this very pass in 1693 — Don Francisco Tapia's map shows it plain as day. Bernie likes to think a pirate or two trailed those galleons just outta cannon range...

Ahhh, Leonard Destin — a Connecticut man who washed up here 'round 1850 after a fishin' mishap and never left. He pioneered beach seinin' and gave this village its name when the post office stamped it in 1896. Bernie sailed with captains cut from the same cloth — proud, salty, and married to the sea.

In 1929 the locals grabbed shovels and dug a brand-new pass after a storm slammed the old one shut. Then in 1969 they hauled boulders all the way from Kentucky to build these jetties — now the best snorkelin' rocks on the coast!

The Destin Fishing Rodeo's been runnin' every October since 1948 — the longest-runnin' fishin' tournament in the world! And Destin didn't even become a city 'til 1984. Bernie remembers when ye could walk the whole harbor barefoot and know every captain by name.

In 1983 a sharp lad named Andrew Dier won a contest namin' this stretch the Emerald Coast — and the name stuck like barnacles to a hull. The green ye see? That's sunlight bouncin' off ancient Appalachian quartz on the seafloor.

1935, mateys — me Pa Coleman Lee Kelly and me Ma Mattie May packed up the five of us and rolled into a sleepy fishin' village called Destin. Bought acres of pine forest along the bay and started turpentine farmin' — sticky, hard work that built the family. From that sap we grew into fishin', groves, and tourism. Bernie was just a wee lad then, but he remembers the smell of pine and saltwater like it was yesterday.

Twenty-five feet of fiberglass glory, painted brighter than a parrot's wing! Me family raised him in 1967 outside our Green Knight restaurant & lounge — steaks, live music, dancin' till the harbor lights blurred. For 26 years folks gave directions by him: 'turn at the Knight, then on to the beach.' When the corner sold in '93, Bernie himself bought the liquor license AND the Knight, and reopened as Bernie B's Green Knight Inn on Okaloosa Island. That noble fella was family.

Me Ma Mattie May was the soul of the family. After Pa was gone, she poured the Kelly fortune back into Destin — arts, music, schools, scholarships. The Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation still puts on concerts under the stars and lifts up young artists today. True bounty ain't gold, mateys — it's what ye leave behind for the folks comin' after.

Walk these grounds and ye'll feel it — the same bay me Pa scouted in '35, now a community bearin' the family name. Bernie's proud, but he'll tell ye true: the real Kelly bounty was never the land. It was the captains we raised, the neighbors we fed, the Knight we guarded. Destin's grown into somethin' grand — and a little piece of every Kelly is woven through it.

Arrr, Billy Bowlegs — William Augustus Bowles to the historians — ran with the Creek and the Seminole, and lore says he stashed silver and gold in these very bayous. The Fort Walton Pirate Festival's been celebratin' him since 1953. Bernie can't prove the gold's still there... but he can't prove it ain't.
